OUDF404 research

The Poem my group is interpreting into a two minute film sequence is based around a forbidden love story between religions. Before diving into solid ideas and a plot i decided to research what my audience considers to be a forbidden love story and what makes a unique story in the sub genre.
These quotes are taken from a wiki answers forum asking peoples views on Forbidden love stories:

"I think the reason they are so popular is that they're very relatable."

"They say the forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest, and I find that statement to be so unbelievable true. People want what they can't have, it's in our nature."

"I like love that makes sense. I like relationships that don't just come out of nowhere and toss themselves in the readers' face"

On the forum i came across the general conception that people now find the vampire fantasy forbidden love story a cliche and has been killed to death.
What i have discovered is the love story has to be relatable to the audience to catch their own love up in the story.

I came across a short love story called "Be Near Me" on Vimeo

Be Near Me from John X. Carey on Vimeo.

This short piece of film is based on finding solace in the ones you have lost. Which can relate to a lot of people that have lost someone they care about. Certain scenes like at 0.40 where the two are seen blowing out birthday candles together. Tiny moments in time that cannot be lost like a bag full of small diamonds, every single one just as precious as the last.
These scenes are brilliant and can invoke an emotive response in nearly all generations for so many people can relate and live out their own story within the film.
I think our story should follow a similar trail, emphasising on moments the two have with one and another and as the story goes on invoking an emotive response in the audience at what they had together but they're forbidden to share it.

Coming back to the quotes from the forum "I like love that makes sense" I feel "Be Near Me" does this extremely well and is a topic our group should focus on in the production of our piece. Dialogue is not exactly necessary in telling this idea and can be done with short snappy scenes like a pin point memory in the mind that our audience can relate to. Telling the story as if it were warm vivid memories.

Matty Lambert, Mark Webb and BMX

Matty Lambert to me is a huge inspiration to my work and my bmx life. He is an extremely ingenuitive and creative Filmer bringing bmx edits new life and a new artistic movement to the scene

Tutorial video story board OUDF404

My next brief is a tutorial video in which i have to make an instructional video describing how to perform a task in intricate detail. With my roots in BMX i have decided to do a video on how to Jay hop a BMX bike for beginners.
In this video i plan for it to be shot at Hyde park skatepark in Leeds. The starting sequence of the video will contain close up shots of me talking and describing how to perform the trick with shots and clips of me performing it. Particularly pausing when i am talking about a certain part or sequence of the trick.
I plan on using the high speed camera in my Tutorial video. I think it will be the best way to convey my project in describing in detail how to do a Jay-hop on a bmx bike.
I plan to have annotations on the screen whilst the shot is playing in detail, describing every movement and action you must take whilst attempting the trick.

OUDF404 Gaspar Noé

Where to exactly start with this film has left me sitting behind my desk for quite some time now... I saw this nearly 2 months ago and yet I haven't quite been able to shake it from my brain ever since! I think i will start with what i found wrong with the film. It was just too long. Especially in the second the film just seemed to drag on a bit leaving me over whelmed at the intensity of the film.

Despite this, the film has left me with the feeling that i've been through an abstract, hallucinogenic fantasy that just seemed to draw me inwards. Everything about it was just unique and different despite its over whelming 162 minutes run time, i was glued for every second. Gaspar Noè's directing was superb to say the least. The first person camera angle made me feel extremely intimate with the character that left me felt in-bodied with the main character Oscar as you follow his life through the underground streets of Tokyo. This with the combined mind blowing special effects made the film seem like a roller coaster journey that i could not get off until it had grounded to a halt.

The whole film is shot in real time, which i think many viewers would find hard to watch, especially with some of the opening scenes. But these scenes play vital role in the film with understanding what is happening to Oscar, which when everything starts kicking off gets pretty dark. Bottom of sea dark. This film in-holds everything a parent would want to keep away from their children. This is not a film you would watch with a couple of friends around for a relaxing night. It is something you have to prepare to think about and get sucked into the void just like I did.

In conclusion Gasper Noé's directing was incredible. Despite the length of the film (which i believe was done by Noé on puroise to in-body the character and realise that this trip will never end) i believe it is an amazing film. And if you had the time to spare should be prepared for one hell of a ride.

I will soon to be taking on the director position in my own project at uni and hope i can convey some of the artistic and ingenuitive themes that Noé has brought to us in 'Enter the void'

Photoraphy Induction

On Monday i had my second lesson for my photography induction, in this lesson i finalized all my pictures and edited them.
It has taken me a while to upload them to my blog since i have been fixated on finishing my initial stages of my character design, which has taken longer than expected due to work accidentally being erased.

This blog will come soon but for now i will leave you with some of the pictures i have produced

Liquicity

'Liquicity' a new and extremely popular YouTube channel has today reached 100k subscribers and has released a mix to celebrate.

The internet has changed everything, the world has changed radically in the short time the internet has been present and this is no different in Drum and Bass. Underground music has changed dramatically due to accessibility to the internet, genres are quickly changing all the time and the audience is growing rapidly. Liquicity has pioneered the Liquid Drum and Bass genre dramatically since early 2008 and since then the popularity has sky rocketed. But is Drum and Bass popularity growth good for the genre?
Bass music is reaching new heights with songs even hitting the UK charts. And with Liquid Drum and Bass widely considered to be the easiest to listen to, is leading the forefront in this growth. Liquid Drum and Bass, for those that don't know is a sub genre to Drum and Bass. It uses similar bass lines and bar layouts to other styles but contains fewer bar-oriented samples and more instrumental layers which are both synthesized and natural, Many people consider Liquid Drum and Bass to be more euphorically and ambient invoking deep emotions in the free spirit of the symphonies.

So why is its growth considered by many hardcore fans as bad? Many fans argue that Drum and Bass doesnt need fame and money because that's not what the music is about, it comes from people making the music because they love it and dancing with your friends. Which is a cliche and has been said about every genre, but i believe it is different. Much like the free festivals organized in America in the late 60's early 70's Drum and Bass comes from this very same movement in banding together and making the music happen with organized underground illegal raves spreading the love for the music.
Although it may never and would take a long time to be seen as a main steam genre Drum and Bass still has a long way to go and it will be interesting to see where it will head.

The Pacific

The HBO tv series 'The Pacific', which was broadcasted last year on sky has a huge influence on my character i am designing.
The pacific a sequel to the critically acclaimed 'Band of brothers' tells a very different story about World war 2.

The series follows three main characters, one character in particular Robert Leckie takes us to the brink of madness and the psychological effect that war can have. The series goes into depth in how Robert fought two wars, one against the Japanese and one again the jungle itself.
Its a hugely captivating and moving series that i recommend you watch with its philosophy of war having a major impact on my character. Looking further into the production of The Pacific i have come across storyboards of many different scenes that i believe will help my character construction

Mutiny bike co never seem to disappoint, the production value is amazing for what they have set out to do. Their edits always seem to be a little different and quirky. never fails to bring a grin to my face!
Great to see some unseen uk street, keep the uk edits coming!

Another stunning edit from Mutiny shot in Leeds is Roey killing it at the works skatepark, check it out!

Character Design

My first brief for uni has started and my task in hand is to design, make and create a character.
I've thought hard about what type of character i am going to create and have drawn upon resources from my a level media to aid my work. So I have decided to go down the root of a soldier.

The image above depicts Witt from 'The thin red line' a character in which i have drawn a lot of inspiration in building my own character. His view on warfare and the philosophy behind it has made me think in a very different way about war and have tried to convey this trail of thought through my own character.

The Vietnam war has also shaped my character hugely. A war that changed a nation and a whole society holds similar emotions of the environment i want my character to be facing.
